Faith and the Big Red Dog

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path. Proverbs 3:5-6

On the way to Washington DC after church on Sunday morning (I camped out Friday night to get tickets for our family to go to the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday), Morgan told Kristen: "Mommy, this year I'm going to be brave and talk to Clifford because God is with me when Im scared." You see, we've been to this event before and she knows that all of the PBS characters that she loves to watch on TV are there in real life(you know, those character suits that make 3 inch tall TV characters 6 foot tall 3-dimensional things that, from a 3-year-olds perspective, are larger than life and might get you if you get too close?). She's been learning a lot about God this year in CCAP and Community Bible Study and one of the things that has stuck is that God is always with her and can help her when she's afraid.

From a dad's perspective, it seems kind of silly to be afraid of Clifford. After all, I know it's just a person in a costume who wouldn't dream of hurting my child on the White House lawn. But she doesn't know that. Aren't our fears often the same way? We see something that looms at us larger than life; it's not what we expect; and all we can think about is it's gonna get me. God, our father, just shakes his head. He understands our fear, but he sees the larger perspective. He knows he can take care of it, if we'll just have the faith of a little child and know that God is with me when I'm scared. I don't know what specifically scares you, but I do know the God who conquers fear. Do you trust him?

Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Have you faced your fears with God's help today?
